A Wall Street Journal bestseller, now in paperback. Poker champion turned decision strategist Annie Duke teaches you how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions. Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time. There's always an element of luck that you can't control, and there's always information hidden from view. So the key to long-term success (and avoiding worrying yourself to death) is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? ...more

Book Cover of Dan Heath - Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen
Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen
By Dan Heath
4.76
|2020|320 Pages
Wall Street Journal Bestseller. New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath explores how to prevent problems before they happen, drawing on insights from hundreds of interviews with unconventional problem solvers. So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, doctors treat patients with chronic illnesses, and call-center reps address customer complaints.
But many crimes, chronic illnesses, and customer complaints are preventable. So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention? Upstream probes the psychological forces that push us downstream—including “problem blindness,” which can leave us oblivious to serious problems in our midst. And Heath introduces us to the thinkers who have overcome these obstacles and scored massive victories by switching to an upstream mindset. One online travel website prevented twenty million customer service calls every year by making some simple tweaks to its booking system. A major urban school district cut its dropout rate in half after it figured out that it could predict which students would drop out—as early as the ninth grade. A European nation almost eliminated teenage alcohol and drug abuse by deliberately changing the nation’s culture. And one EMS system accelerated the emergency-response time of its ambulances by using data to predict where 911 calls would emerge—and forward-deploying its ambulances to stand by in those areas. Upstream delivers practical solutions for preventing problems rather than reacting to them. How many problems in our lives and in society are we tolerating simply because we’ve forgotten that we can fix them? Review “Dan Heath has written the ultimate primer on the power of prevention, a work that deserves a prominent place on every leader’s bookshelf. Packed with vivid stories and practical examples, Upstream is the rare book that can both revitalize your business and make our world a better place." —Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of When, Drive, and To Sell Is Human. "Upstream contains research and storytelling that informs, engages and, above all, entertains. If you want to stop firefighting problems and prevent them from happening in the first place, then you should read what Dan Heath has to say." —Charles Duhigg, New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better. “Upstream draws on examples from across the spectrum, from sport to business. But Heath is clever enough to focus on significant societal issues, such as sexual harassment, climate change, and school shootings, which gives the book a substantial feel that some more superficial problem-solving manuals lack.” —Financial Times, Best Book of the Month. “Psychology meets neuroscience and self-help in this engaging study by business writer Heath. . . . A smart, provocative book that guides readers to better decision-making when confronting seemingly intractable problems.” —Kirkus Reviews. “[An] elegant manifesto . . . With the frenetic pace of modern life, Heath observes, it’s easy to become accustomed to putting out fires instead of looking for the spark that’s igniting them. . . . This is a pragmatic guide for those seeking big changes on either an individual or organizational level.” —Publishers Weekly. “Heath presents a convincing argument for shifting resources ‘upstream’ and focusing on prevention rather than cure.” —Booklist. PRAISE FOR THE POWER OF MOMENTS:. "I read this cover to cover and learned something new on each page. Beautifully written, brilliantly researched—I'm recommending it to everyone I know!"—Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author of Grit. “The most interesting, immediately actionable book I’ve read in quite a while. I walked away with new ideas for motivating employees, delighting customers, engaging students, and even planning family vacations. If life is a series of moments, the Heath brothers have transformed how I plan to spend mine.”—Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take, Originals, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg. “A sincere introduction to how readers can shape and improve the peaks in their own experiences. Infused with positivity and enthusiasm . . . Readers hungry for a bigger slice of life will find this book valuable. Heuristic advice and life-affirming direction form a gratifying combination in this motivational handbook.” —Kirkus. “This terrific book is bursting with practical insights and memorable stories on every page. It's as relevant to product designers and meeting planners as it is to teachers and parents. I've already put many of its novel suggestions to work. Don't miss it.”—Eric Ries, author of bestselling author of The Lean Startup, The Startup Way. "Flat out amazing."—Jake Knapp, New York Times bestselling author of Sprint About the Author Dan Heath and his brother, Chip, have written four New York Times bestselling books: Made to Stick, Switch, Decisive, and The Power of Moments. Heath is a senior fellow at Duke University’s CASE center, which supports entrepreneurs fighting for social good. He lives in Durham, North Carolina. The Heath brothers’ books have sold more than three million copies worldwide and have been translated into thirty-three languages. (show less)

An exploration of how computer algorithms can be applied to our everyday lives to solve common decision-making problems and illuminate the workings of the human mind. What should we do, or leave undone, in a day or a lifetime? How much messiness should we accept? What balance of the new and familiar is the most fulfilling? "The author makes a compelling case that we often start solving a problem before thinking deeply about whether we are solving the right problem. If you want the superpower of solving better problems, read this book." -- Eric Schmidt, former CEO, Google. Are you solving the right problems? Have you or your colleagues ever worked hard on something, only to find out you were focusing on the wrong problem entirely? Most people have. In a survey, 85 percent of companies said they often struggle to solve the right problems. The consequences are severe: Leaders fight the wrong strategic battles.
Teams spend their energy on low-impact work. Startups build products that nobody wants. Organizations implement "solutions" that somehow make things worse, not better. Everywhere you look, the waste is staggering. As Peter Drucker pointed out, there's nothing more dangerous than the right answer to the wrong question. There is a way to do better. The key is reframing, a crucial, underutilized skill that you can master with the help of this book. Using real-world stories and unforgettable examples like "the slow elevator problem," author Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg offers a simple, three-step method - Frame, Reframe, Move Forward - that anyone can use to start solving the right problems. Reframing is not difficult to learn. It can be used on everyday challenges and on the biggest, trickiest problems you face. In this visually engaging, deeply researched book, you’ll learn from leaders at large companies, from entrepreneurs, consultants, nonprofit leaders, and many other breakthrough thinkers. It's time for everyone to stop barking up the wrong trees. Teach yourself and your team to reframe, and growth and success will follow. Review Named a "top pick" for leadership books in 2020 by Adam Grant on LinkedIn. "The author makes a compelling case that we often start solving a problem before thinking deeply about whether we are solving the right problem. If you want the superpower of solving better problems, read this book." -- Eric Schmidt, former CEO, Google. "Whatever problems you're facing, this book is going to transform the way you solve them. Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg is an exceptionally lucid thinker and writer, and he has just raised the bar for practical wisdom. His framework won't just help you generate more creative ideas and make smarter decisions--it will teach you to see around corners." -- Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author, Originals and Give and Take; host, TED WorkLife podcast. "This unexpectedly engaging book is as practical as it is wise. Wedell-Wedellsborg shows us how to take off the cognitive and cultural blinders that prevent us from solving tough problems in our organizations and in our lives, and even makes it sound like fun." -- Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School; author, The Fearless Organization. "Problem solving underpins strategy, management, and leadership, yet few business people receive any formal training in it. Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg has created a practical and accessible manual for how to frame and reframe problems, which should be very valuable to anyone engaged in business or government." -- Martin Reeves, Senior Partner, Boston Consulting Group; Chairman, BCG Henderson Institute. "Every once in a while, I read a book that makes me slap my forehead and ask, Why in the world haven't I been doing this? It was a particularly hard slap after reading What's Your Problem?--a book that provides you, quite literally, with a simple, evidence-based process to be more creative, insightful, and effective in your work every day. It also happens to be a delight to read." -- Heidi Grant, author, Nine Things Successful People Do Differently and Reinforcements. "Here's our challenge to you: Open this book to any page and start reading. If you don't feel immediately compelled to buy it, your life is a lot more interesting than ours. This book is a joy to read. It brings to mind the awesome power of that rare simplicity found 'on the far side of complexity.' It's the most useful business book we’ve read in years." -- Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, New York Times bestselling coauthors, Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback. About the Author Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg is a globally recognized expert on innovation and problem solving. He has shared and refined his reframing method with clients like Cisco, Microsoft, Citigroup, Time Warner, AbbVie, Caterpillar, Amgen, Prudential, Union Pacific, Credit Suisse, Deloitte, the Wall Street Journal, and the United Nations. Problem Solving Strategies Crossing the River with Dogs and Other Mathematical Adventures Why Teach a Course in Problem Solving? The NCTM Principles andStandards state that problem solving should be integrated throughout all courses and grade levels. For example, guess-and-check is a natural strategy to apply in algebra. Advanced math students often use finite differences to study functions and sequences. And drawing a diagram and using physical representations are commonly employed strategies in many contexts. However, many students never encounter valuable strategies such as matrix logic or unit analysis.
And in content-crowded math classes, few students get the concentrated practice or time necessary to fully develop their problem-solving skills. By taking a semester course in problem solving, students can master a multitude of strategies while developing confidence in their problem-solving abilities. Your students will be better prepared to meet the challenges of school and life by taking this course. (show less)

Shifting over to critical thinking means thinking purposefully using a framework and toolset, enabling thought processes that lead to better decisions, faster problem solving, and creative innovation. Think Smarter provides clear, actionable steps toward improving your critical thinking skills, plus exercises that clarify complex concepts by putting theory into practice. Features include:. A comprehensive critical thinking frameworkOver twenty-five "tools" to help you think more criticallyCritical thinking implementation for functions and activitiesExamples of the real-world use of each toolLearn what questions to ask, how to uncover the real problem to solve, and mistakes to avoid. Recognize assumptions your can rely on versus those without merit, and train your brain to tick through your mental toolbox to arrive at more innovative solutions. Critical thinking is the top skill on the wish list in the business world, and sharpening your ability can have profound affects throughout all facets of life. Think Smarter: Critical Thinking to Improve Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills provides a roadmap to more effective and productive thought. From the Inside Flap “I don’t have time to think!”. This cliché is at the core of troubled and underperforming workplaces around the globe. In reality, thinking is the most important driver in problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity, and no business can do without it. In daily life and at all levels of an organization, the ability to think critically sets us apart from those who struggle to problem solve. As seasoned critical thinking consultant Michael Kallet explains, solving difficult problems isn’t magic―it’s a skill we can all learn by using the simple techniques in Think Smarter. For the past decade, Kallet has been training people to think critically. In Think Smarter, he reveals the techniques that lead to higher quality and outside the box results. Contrary to popular belief, critical thinking does not take a lifetime to master. You can quickly learn how to get better results from your thought processes. The problems that really matter are the ones with no obvious solution. To move forward in life and in business, you need to meet these challenges with stronger decisions and more creative solutions. Thanks to the exercises and examples in Think Smarter, this is a goal you can achieve starting today. No one has time for neuroscience when there are important goals that need to be achieved. The world won’t stop turning while we wade through theory, so innovations and improvements need to happen fast. Think Smarter is not a book of theory. It’s a clear, easy to read set of over 25 concrete tools that you can put to use right away. Solving technical problems, allocating resources, managing teams, working with customers, optimizing risk―critical thinking can revolutionize all of these areas. No matter who you are or what you do, your decisions make a difference. The quality and magnitude of that difference depends on one thing―critical thinking. Thinking drives absolutely everything we do. It’s the first step toward critical decisions that determine the winners and losers in every industry, and it even influences what we get out of life. In Think Smarter, you’ll learn that if you aren’t thinking critically, you might as well be letting someone else live life for you. The bottom line is, if you want to maximize your chances for success in the areas that matter, and take control of the results, you need to learn to Think Smarter. From the Back Cover From the mind behind HeadScratchers, a guide to getting more out of thinking. We often hear about the importance of thinking critically and acting strategically. And yet, there are few resources that provide a business-focused, non-academic, practical approach to doing just that. Thankfully, Mike Kallet has come to our rescue. Mike has a very conversational tone in his writing on this critical subject, thereby making what can potentially be a very dry subject an interesting read. More importantly, the examples of how to use the process of critical thinking and the key “takeaways” help the reader apply the content appropriately. In our business, we rely on rapid and accurate decision making, with little margin for error. The concepts in Think Smarter are easy to implement quickly, realizing great results. ―Jacqui Bellini-Murray, Senior Training Manager at Genentech. Intelligence can be found, knowledge can be acquired, but critical thinking can only be developed. Finally, Mike Kallet delivers a guide for honing this much-needed skill in decision making. Practical and simple, yet profound. Every leader, every decision maker, needs this guide! ―Tess Reynolds, CEO at New Door Ventures. Bringing critical thinking and innovation into a company is a worthy goal, but a very difficult and elusive task. Mike Kallet’s Think Smarter is a stimulating, practical guide that expands the thinking processes to embrace new concepts while keeping a focus on what is success. This is a book developed through years of working with leaders and teams to move them to new levels of problem solving and performance. I have both participated and overseen teams who have been coached by Mike’s critical thinking. The improvements in the subsequent product developments and intra-team dynamics were impressive, breaking historical patterns of thinking processes. The exercises in Think Smarter are especially helpful in bringing clarity to the use of the tools and techniques introduced. Think Smarter is a must read for leaders who are challenged with solving the everyday problems of a business while finding approaches that step up the innovative capabilities of their teams. ―Dan Yost, Managing Partner at Dankat and former EVP at Qwest Communications. About the Author MICHAEL KALLET founded HeadScratchers in 2004 to train business professionals and leaders in critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and creativity. Through workshops, webinars, and keynote speeches, he teaches people to apply critical thinking techniques to real world business challenges. This is the SOLUTIONS MANUAL ONLY to The Art of Problem Solving, Volume 2. The Art of Problem Solving, Volume 2, is the classic problem solving textbook used by many successful high school math teams and enrichment programs and have been an important building block for students who, like the authors, performed well enough on the American Mathematics Contest series to qualify for the Math Olympiad Summer Program which trains students for the United States International Math Olympiad team.
Volume 2 is appropriate for students who have mastered the problem solving fundamentals presented in Volume 1 and are ready for a greater challenge. Although the Art of Problem Solving is widely used by students preparing for mathematics competitions, the book is not just a collection of tricks. The emphasis on learning and understanding methods rather than memorizing formulas enables students to solve large classes of problems beyond those presented in the book. Speaking of problems, the Art of Problem Solving, Volume 2, contains over 500 examples and exercises culled from such contests as the Mandelbrot Competition, the AMC tests, and ARML. Full solutions (not just answers!) are available for all the problems in the solution manual. Problem SolvingNumber Theory
Through its engaging and unusual problems, this book demonstrates methods of reasoning necessary for learning number theory. Every technique is followed by problems (as well as detailed hints and solutions) that apply theorems immediately, so readers can solve a variety of abstract problems in a systematic, creative manner. New solutions often require the ingenious use of earlier mathematical concepts - not the memorization of formulas and facts. Questions also often permit experimental numeric validation or visual interpretation to encourage the combined use of deductive and intuitive thinking.
The first chapter starts with simple topics like even and odd numbers, divisibility, and prime numbers and helps the reader to solve quite complex, Olympiad-type problems right away. It also covers properties of the perfect, amicable, and figurate numbers and introduces congruence. The next chapter begins with the Euclidean algorithm, explores the representations of integer numbers in different bases, and examines continued fractions, quadratic irrationalities, and the Lagrange Theorem. The last section of Chapter Two is an exploration of different methods of proofs. The third chapter is dedicated to solving Diophantine linear and nonlinear equations and includes different methods of solving Fermat’s (Pell’s) equations. It also covers Fermat’s factorization techniques and methods of solving challenging problems involving exponent and factorials. Chapter Four reviews the Pythagorean triple and quadruple and emphasizes their connection with geometry, trigonometry, algebraic geometry, and stereographic projection. A special case of Waring’s problem as a representation of a number by the sum of the squares or cubes of other numbers is covered, as well as quadratic residuals, Legendre and Jacobi symbols, and interesting word problems related to the properties of numbers. Appendices provide a historic overview of number theory and its main developments from the ancient cultures in Greece, Babylon, and Egypt to the modern day. Drawing from cases collected by an accomplished female mathematician, Methods in Solving Number Theory Problems is designed as a self-study guide or supplementary textbook for a one-semester course in introductory number theory. It can also be used to prepare for mathematical Olympiads. Elementary algebra, arithmetic and some calculus knowledge are the only prerequisites. Number theory gives precise proofs and theorems of an irreproachable rigor and sharpens analytical thinking, which makes this book perfect for anyone looking to build their mathematical confidence. Become the greatest problem solver you can be! Bad problem solving costs individuals and society incalculable amounts of time, money, and sanity. In this book Nat Greene—who’s been solving hard problems professionally for over twenty years—shares nine behaviors anyone can adopt to find solutions to even the most seemingly intractable problems. The problem with most problem solving, Greene says, is that it’s not problem solving at all: it’s guessing. We have an idea of what might work and we try it out. If that doesn’t work, we try something else. And so on.
It’s inefficient at best, and with really hard problems there are simply too many variables for guessing to work. Greene shows you how to adopt the behaviors great problem solvers use to arrive at solutions efficiently—without guessing. He illustrates them with examples ranging from everyday issues like fixing a malfunctioning garage door to stopping frequent breakdowns at a chemical plant (saving millions of dollars) to addressing the scourge of poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. So stop guessing and start solving today! (show less)

Whether you are a student or a working professional, you can benefit from being better at solving the complex problems that come up in your life. Strategic Thinking in Complex Problem Solving provides a general framework and the necessary tools to help you do so.
Based on his groundbreaking course at Rice University, engineer and former strategy consultant Arnaud Chevallier provides practical ways to develop problem solving skills, such as investigating complex questions with issue maps, using logic to promote creativity, leveraging analogical thinking to approach unfamiliar problems, and managing diverse groups to foster innovation. This book breaks down the resolution process into four steps: 1) frame the problem (identifying what needs to be done), 2) diagnose it (identifying why there is a problem, or why it hasn't been solved yet), 3) identify and select potential solutions (identifying how to solve the problem), and 4) implement and monitor the solution (resolving the problem, the 'do'). For each of these four steps - the what, why, how, and do - this book explains techniques that promotes success and demonstrates how to apply them on a case study and in additional examples. The featured case study guides you through the resolution process, illustrates how these concepts apply, and creates a concrete image to facilitate recollection. Strategic Thinking in Complex Problem Solving is a tool kit that integrates knowledge based on both theoretical and empirical evidence from many disciplines, and explains it in accessible terms. As the book guides you through the various stages of solving complex problems, it also provides useful templates so that you can easily apply these approaches to your own personal projects. With this book, you don't just learn about problem solving, but how to actually do it. (show less)

Problem Solving 101
A Simple Book for Smart People
By Ken Watanabe

|2009|128 Pages
The fun and simple problem-solving guide that took Japan by storm. Ken Watanabe originally wrote Problem Solving 101 for Japanese schoolchildren. His goal was to help shift the focus in Japanese education from memorization to critical thinking, by adapting some of the techniques he had learned as an elite McKinsey consultant. He was amazed to discover that adults were hungry for his fun and easy guide to problem solving and decision making. The book became a surprise Japanese bestseller, with more than 370,000 in print after six months. Now American businesspeople can also use it to master some powerful skills.
Watanabe uses sample scenarios to illustrate his techniques, which include logic trees and matrixes. A rock band figures out how to drive up concert attendance. An aspiring animator budgets for a new computer purchase. Students decide which high school they will attend. Illustrated with diagrams and quirky drawings, the book is simple enough for a middleschooler to understand but sophisticated enough for business leaders to apply to their most challenging problems. Review "Problem Solving 101 teaches us to recognize the common elements in the decisions we face every day and how to think carefully about them. It offers tricks and tips for every age. If I may offer one more suggestion: when you don't know which of two options to choose, toss a coin, and when it is up there in the air think about how you want it to fall, and you have your answer.". --DAN ARIELY, author of the New York Times bestseller Predictably Irrational. "This book made me angry. It made me angry because there are so many people in this country who need to read it, who should read it, who will benefit enormously from reading it . . . and won't. They'll watch a reality show on TV instead. If everyone made decisions like Ken Watanabe, the world would be a better place.". --SETH GODIN, author of Tribes. "This is an excellent primer on problem solving.". --LOWELL BRYAN, author of Mobilizing Minds About the Author Ken Watanabe grew up bilingual in Japan and studied in the United States at Yale and Harvard Business School. He was a management consultant at McKinsey & Company for six years. He is now the founder and CEO of his own education, entertainment, and media company, Delta Studio. (show less)

"Problem-solving becomes a very important part of our makeup as we grow into maturity or move up the corporate ladder." - Zig Ziglar. Do you have complex problems?... ...Are your solutions effective? Do the problems reappear? Most of us encounter problems in our lives, either at work or at home. These problems cause stress in our minds and leave us exhausted. Instinctively, we start to take ad-hoc actions that we think will resolve the problem, but we soon realize that our actions are not effective and do not prevent or solve the core problem.
Structured problem solving provides a systematic approach to identifying the root causes to a problem. Many scientific tools and methods have been developed to identify effective solutions to any problem. The most widely used problem-solving techniques are listed below:. - Fishbone Diagram. - Brainstorming. - Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). - SWOT matrix. - 5Whys. In this latest version of the book, I have added a new chapter with six additional problem-solving techniques as:. - Six Thinking Hats. - Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. - Hurson’s Productive Thinking Model. - Story Boarding. - Means-Ends Analysis (MEA). - First Principles Thinking. A problem exists when there is a gap between the current performance level of a process, product, or service, and the desired performance level. Problem solving, as it s covered in this book, is the systematic investigation of a process to identify the root cause of the gap, and taking corrective action to eliminate the gap and keep it from occurring in the future. WE START WITH GOOD TEAMS. - Understand work as a process. - Identify important problems to work on. - Develop team skills. - Find the root cause. - Generate innovative solutions. Use these 7 step processes to solve organizational problems.
Contains NEW examples in health care and information technology. Includes new material on Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Additional material on Scatter Diagram, A3 Charts, as well as a tool for verifying root causes. As a bonus the appendix now holds the key to Kaizen Blitz! Excellent benefits to using these tools:. - Finding and solving problems in your organization's processes. - Using a systematic model to solve simple to complex problems. - How to easily and clearly implement the 7-Step problem-solving model. - Creating a storyboard. - Expert tips throughout the Jogger, clearly marked. - Advanced problem-solving concepts and techniques. Why is this problem-solving model better and different from other models? Teams have often learned about the tools apart from the context of a problem-solving situation. The 7-Step Model presented in this book provides this context. The presentation of this model provides teams with a step-by-step approach to problem solving, includes sub-steps with recommended tools for doing each of the seven steps, and illustrates a case example that is introduced throughout each step and tool application. GOAL/QPC can also design custom covers for this Memory Jogger to match your company colors and branding and include a message from your company executives about the importance of this topic to the business. Analytical reasoning or logical reasoning is now a prominent feature of almost every competitive exam. It was the need of the hour to publish a book on this subject. This was and still remains the first and only book on analytical reasoning. In India there are only few books available that treat reasoning as a subject. In nearly all the books, we find only a collection of questions and their answers. This is the first and only book that attempts to build CONCEPTS of reasoning before coming to questions. The book gives crystal-clear concepts of all topics. In addition quicker techniques are given wherever possible.
This would mean that students who read this book (i) will have the ABILITY to solve questions of reasoning (ii) IN TIME. This is what makes this book magical. The book covers every type and variation of the questions that are asked in today's competitive exams. Eight new chapters have now been added to include some latest trends and topics. Machines need to be productive, people need to be effective. Personal Kanban asks only that we visualize our work and limit our work-in-progress. Visualizing work allows us to transform our workload into an actionable, context-sensitive flow. Limiting our work-in-progress helps us complete what we start and understand the value of our choices. Combined, these two simple acts encourage us to improve how we work to balance our personal, professional, and social lives. Focus on doing better, not doing more.
Using the same Lean principles from manufacturing that led the Japanese auto industry to become a global leader in quality, Personal Kanban applies them to individual and team work. Understand why we do the things we do. Neither a prescription nor a plan, Personal Kanban provides a light, actionable, achievable framework for understanding our work and its context. Learn why students, parents, business leaders, major corporations, and world governments all see immediate results with Personal Kanban. Scroll Up And Grab Your Copy Today! From the Author Personal Kanban is all about understanding and effectiveness. People are so busy they can't see past their daily to-dos. They let options slide by while working on tasks of little value. At any given time, we want to know what we are doing, be able to communicate that to others, and see what our true options are. Other personal and team management systems are top-heavy, requiring significant work to update and maintain. Personal Kanban runs in the background, always providing you with information and not adding additional work or pain. From the Inside Flap Carmen Medina: Director of Intelligence (Retired) Central Intelligence Agency: Personal Kanban is a must read for knowledge workers and their leaders who recognize that old productivity models don't apply to knowledge work and seek a more realistic and centered approach. The ideas are deceptively simple but in that simplicity is their strength. As soon as I finished reading it, I started drawing out the landscape of my projects and felt much the better for it.Ross Mayfield: CEO of SocialText: Personal productivity systems usually fail in practice because of complexity and they don't reflect the collaborative nature of real work. Personal Kanban provides the simplest structure that could possibly work and lets you achieve a state of flow.Jerry Michalski: guide, Relationship Economy eXpedition: Trying to get more effective? Why use Rube Goldberg systems of tabulated notebooks and special-purpose inserts? Instead, consider a system that flows like a stream and focuses your attention, both on the task at hand and on making your process more effective. That's what Personal Kanban is, and it may just fit your thinking and doing style. About the Author Jim Benson's 20 years since university have seen him build light rail systems and neighborhoods as a urban planner, enterprise software and web sites for major government agencies as the owner of Gray Hill Solutions, and, most recently, as a collaborative management consultant helping create better working environments for teams of all sizes. The common thread in his history has the physical, regulatory, technological, emotional and political boundaries of community. Jim has worked with corporate, government, and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. Taking Lean principles from manufacturing and Agile methodologies from software design, Jim Benson and Modus Cooperandi help individuals, teams, and organizations design collaborative systems. These systems are often built using social media technology as an enabler for communication and collaboration. Tonianne DeMaria Barry's consulting career spans the fashion industry and government agencies, non-profit associations and Fortune 100 corporations, start-ups and international development. Her academic training in history lends itself well to management consulting, where she contends that especially in business, the present value of the past is often under-appreciated. Forever asking Why and How things happen, she helps her clients uncover, analyze, and interpret their institutional artifacts. Leveraging the stories and values embedded within an organization's culture, she helps individuals use their history to establish priorities, achieve goals, and make informed and innovative decisions. Much like Personal Kanban itself, she wants her clients to acknowledge their past and present contexts, appreciate the interconnectedness and flow of events, and extract lessons from the patterns which emerge so they can better plan for the future. Applied Problem-Solving in Healthcare Management is a practical textbook devoted to developing and strengthening problem-solving and decision-making leadership competencies of healthcare administration students and healthcare management professionals.
Built upon the University of Minnesota Master of Healthcare Administration Program’s Problem-Solving Method, the text describes the “never assume” mindset and the structured method that drive evidence-based, action-oriented problem-solving. |164 Pages
Focusing on endodontic problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques, this book covers ways to avoid problems throughout the full spectrum of treatment - from diagnosis to posttreatment. In delivering a consistently high level of quality care, this approach follows three steps: how to prevent problems in treatment, how to identify problems that exist or that occur during treatment, and how to manage those problems once they are recognized. This edition offers practical ways to address the most common clinical problems, scenarios, and issues that pose dilemmas for the student or clinician.
Succinct tables, boxes, and bulleted lists make information easier to find. 1,150 illustrations show problem-solving techniques put into practice, allowing for better identification of conditions and treatments. Expanded discussion of documentation looks at legal forms and malpractice issues - useful preparation for preventing or dealing with legal situations. Concise and contemporary reference lists are included at the end of every chapter. New and revised problem-solving cases present various clinical problems and discuss possible treatment and outcomes. Concise "how-to" text combined with an abundance of radiographs and photographs show how these problem-solving techniques apply to everyday practice. Full-color contemporary design and updated color photos demonstrate in great detail the need-to-know clinical techniques. Procedure boxes provide step-by-step instructions and helpful photographs on important problem-solving techniques. Clinical Tips boxes offer valuable suggestions for how to prevent or manage various situations in everyday practice. Problem Solving list begins each text chapter and presents an "at-a-glance" outline of topics presented in that chapter. Contemporary Technologies and Materials chapter expands upon developments in magnification devices, radiography, handpieces, locators, and techniques, keeping endodontists up to date. Vital Pulp Therapy chapter describes pulp capping procedures and viable procedures for the incompletely formed root apex, providing more detailed information on treatment options for challenging pulp conditions and malformed roots. Microbial Control chapter deals with infection control materials and techniques, important for successful endodontic procedures, maintaining a sanitary practice environment, and for protecting staff and patients from infection. Challenges in Apical Surgery chapter discusses treatment planning and procedures for apical endodontic surgery, offering specific problem-solving strategies for when surgical intervention is essential for tooth retention. Challenges in Periradicular Surgery chapter discusses surgical treatment planning and procedures for problems that occur in locations other than the apex, offering solutions to challenges such as fractured teeth, hemisection, and periodontal defects. Treatment Planning Tooth Retention vs. Tooth Replacement chapter describes options for keeping the tooth vs. extraction and replacement. Endodontic-Orthodontic Clinical Challenges chapter addresses the impact of orthodontic tooth movement on the viability of dental pulp and other interdisciplinary issues. New product information listings at the end of chapters provide additional information and direct the reader to website listings on materials and equipment. (show less)

Describes five time-tested principles for making collaborative efforts more effective, efficient, and even joyful Offers examples from Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit organizations, and communities to illustrate the principles in action Every day we work with others to solve problems and make decisions, but the experience is often stressful, frustrating, and inefficient. In How to Make Collaboration Work, David Straus, a pioneer in the field of group problem solving, introduces five principles of collaboration that have been proven successful time and again in nearly every conceivable setting.
Straus draws on his thirty years of personal and professional experience to show how these principles have been applied by organizations as diverse as Ford Motor Company, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Harvard Business School Publishing, Boston Public Schools, Kaiser Permanente, the city of Denver, and many others. How to Make Collaboration Work shows how collaboration can become a joy rather than a chore-a kind of chemical reaction that releases far more energy than it consumes. (show less)

Solving mathematical problems is both a science and an art. It is a science because we need to learn some basic concepts and skills, and use proper terminology when explaining our solution to other people. It is also an art because very often we need to be creative. There are infinitely many types of math problems, and it is impossible to learn how to solve every problem in the world. However, there are a few basic principles that are good to know. There are a few approaches and methods that are often useful.
In this book, we discuss the major ones, including various types of proofs, the pigeon hole principle, the principle of mathematical induction, invariants, coloring, etc. In each chapter, we provide basic definitions and facts to get you started. We do not prove most of the well-known facts given in this book, since our main goal is to learn how to solve problems, i.e. use these facts. They are usually proved in other college courses such as abstract algebra, number theory, and analysis. Sometimes, however, the idea of a proof of a theorem can be used for solving many problems. In such cases we provide the proof. The book contains over 300 problems on various topics and detailed solutions of approximately half of them. This book is primarily intended for high school and college students and mathematics teachers. Most chapters are accessible to middle school students as well. It would especially be helpful for those competing in mathematics contests and wishing to improve their problem solving skills. The first edition contained some minor errors which have been fixed in the second edition. More problems were also added. (show less)
